I wanted to write this review to warn other parents to not get your children vaccinated here. Most doctors offices give vaccines, which was my previous experience when I lived in Centerville and my son had a different doctor. Now my son goes to Dr. Krista Gelford in Beavercreek and they don't provide vaccines at her office, she sent us to Xenia health department as a referral because my son is about to be five and was due for the chicken pox, MMR, and another vaccine as well. I was a little upset to give him three vaccines in one day in the first place. They were trying to push the flu shot as well on the same day and I said that was too many so I opted out on that one for my son. Now my son has NEVER had an issue getting a vaccine or shot before this. He is a special needs child, he was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech when he was three, so he is very sensitive and he has very poor communication skills. Upon arriving at his scheduled 5pm apt. we waited for an hour just to get back in a room, my mother (my sons grandmother) came for support. Upon finally getting into a room the nurse who administered the vaccines came in with the shots, we tried to tell her my son was special needs and she said she had done this plenty of times. She made me hold my son on my lap very forcefully, I felt in my previous experience that it was too much, she didn't talk to my son at all, she didn't explain what she was doing before she just stuck him in the arm very forcefully and quickly, when he started to scream as if someone was killing him (VERY HIGH PITCHED SCREAMS...I had never heard him scream like that before) She called for another nurse to come in and forcefully hold him down as she gave the other two shots. My son was absolutely traumatized over the whole event. In previous times he had shots or vaccines the doctor always had him sit up on the table and me to turn his head away from the site of administration and the doctor always explained it would be a little poke and would be over soon. Since this my son hasn't been able to sleep, he won't allow me to sleep either because he is afraid to fall asleep and is afraid for me to fall asleep, he has been exhibiting strange unusual behavior for him. Going into panic attacks, crying and screaming for no reason. Every little noise freaks him out and he will cover his ears and scream and cry, this all started to happen later that evening after getting the shots. He has been to the Emergency room THREE times. His doctor has prescribed benedryl and melatonin to try and help him sleep at night. Neither is working so they are now putting him on adderax and if that doesn't work they plan on moving him to clonadine. My son NEVER had any trouble sleeping before, he also wasn't afraid of everything like he is now. He is exhibiting signs of PTSD his doctor has said. I am LIVID! I am extremely angry because now my son has to be put on these different meds which could have potential side effects and he is SO YOUNG! This place has no compassion for children, or special needs children. The woman who gave the vaccines should have to do training classes on how to handle children with disabilities. I am sleep deprived, haven't been able to go to work for two weeks, my son is sleep deprived. This has been an EXTREMELY TRAUMATIC experience for our family. So I am reaching out to other parents to let you know my experience with Xenia Health Department so hopefully it can save you from having this happen to your child as well.
I am a single parent and the Health Dept. has been such a blessing to my family and the community. They offer a sliding fee scale, accept most insurance and provide services such as vaccinations, dental and well child checkups. The staff all seem very dedicated to performing their jobs in an excellent manner. I highly recommend the Health Dept!
